Smoothies=Superfood with a Straw

I never wonder anymore what to eat in the morning: it’s going to be a smoothie. Ever since all the Things came together that made it possible for me to discover this wonderful life hack, my world has become better.

1--My precious husband had gotten me a Ninja Blender for Christmas the year before. I didn’t know how happy I would be later that he did that. Now I use it every day--sometimes twice!

2--I had a nasty bout with a staph infection on both of my hands last spring. This would be a negative but for the fact that it made me start investigating what causes eczema, which was the original reason for the break in my skin that let in the germ.

3--Research led me to understand that my diet was causing eczema and had been behind it my whole life. Something I had always eaten made my intestines sad enough to weep—eczema is the result of inflammation due to a leaky gut. My poor gut lining had holes that proteins could slip through into my wider system. Since I’d always eaten whatever I felt like eating, I had no idea what the offensive food could be. I did an elimination diet and cut out bread, sweets, eggs, dairy, soy, corn, peanuts—anything people said to detox from for a while so things could start healing.

4--The staph infection went away with antibiotics and time. I started noticing my hands no longer itched like they always had! To heal my gut lining, I took probiotics and began to strategically eat foods that have been known to repair and seal it. Enter the magic of smoothies.

Dr. Mark Hyman is a medical doctor who has experienced major health issues himself and relies upon a discipline called functional medicine to heal his body with food. I really appreciated his insights and wisdom during this discovery section of my journey, and I adopted his whole food protein smoothie as part of my routine. Here is my own adapted version of his recipe.

Gut Happy Super Smoothie

I avocado OR 1 banana

½ cup frozen blueberries

½ cup frozen kale

2 Tbsp almond butter

I Tbsp coconut oil

2 tsp. chia seeds

2 tsp. pepitas

2 tsp. hemp seeds

Enough almond milk to fill up to the fill-line (about 1 cup)

In a large Ninja blender vessel, mix until combined and creamy. ALWAYS use a straw, because straws make everything better!

The benefits I’ve received from consuming this every day alongside probiotics, regular exercise and an 80% plant based diet without wheat products or much sugar:

  • No more eczema!

  • Quick breakfast I can make the night before

  • Filling until afternoon

  • Packed with nutrition and no guilt

  • Low calorie

  • 15 pounds GONE

I have lots of other smoothie recipes that I’ll share in later posts. This one is the one that started it all, so it was only fair to feature it first.

I’m drinking one as I write this today!
